What a fire leaves behind
- Soot on walls, ceilings and contents, often in rooms the fire never reached
- Smoke odor soaked into drywall, insulation, carpet and fabrics
- Smoke and soot pulled through the HVAC system and ductwork
- Water from fire hoses and sprinklers, which brings its own water damage and mold risk
- Acidic soot that can discolor and corrode metal, stone and grout if it sits
What to do, and what not to do
- Stay out until the fire department says the building is safe
- Call your insurance carrier and photograph the damage
- Don't wipe or scrub soot. It smears and sets deeper
- Don't run the heating or air conditioning, which spreads soot through the house
- Don't eat food or use medicine that was exposed to heat, smoke or soot
- Call us to start cleanup before residue sets in
Four kinds of smoke residue
Restorers group smoke residue by what burned and how hot the fire was. The type decides how it gets cleaned.
Dry smoke
From paper and wood burning at high heat. Powdery residue that's easier to remove, but it gets into cracks and porous materials.
Wet smoke
From plastics and rubber burning at low heat. Sticky, smeary residue with a strong odor, and harder to clean.
Protein residue
From burned food. Nearly invisible, but it discolors paint and leaves a strong, lingering odor.
Fuel & oil soot
From a malfunctioning oil or gas furnace. Thick, black residue that can spread through the whole house from one event.
How we restore fire damage
Fire jobs usually mean water, soot and odor all at once. We work them in order so nothing gets sealed in.

Wildfire smoke reaches homes that never burned
Colorado's wildfire seasons mean smoke and ash can reach homes miles from a fire. Fine particles get in through vents, windows and the HVAC system and settle into carpet, fabrics and ductwork.

Fire damage FAQs
Is fire damage covered by homeowners insurance?
Fire is a covered loss under most standard homeowners policies, but coverage limits and terms vary. Check with your insurance carrier about your policy.
Can I clean soot myself?
Light, dry soot on a small hard surface can sometimes be vacuumed with a HEPA vacuum, but wiping soot usually smears it deeper into paint and fabric. For anything more than a small area, call a professional before you start cleaning.
How long does smoke odor last?
Smoke odor can linger for months if the residue that causes it isn't removed. Odor comes from residue in drywall, insulation, fabrics and HVAC ducts, so it has to be cleaned out, not covered up.
